PTI trolls threaten The Express Tribune, the white-collar way

Posted on Updated on

So our paper is getting mail bombed by a PTI-led campaign against us for running this story:

War in Afghanistan is jihad, says Imran

The PTI folk have been foaming at the mouth since the release of the report, spewing hate at our reporter and crying foul over his report. First they said it was a fabrication. Then they said it was misrepresentation. (Eventually I assume they’ll say hey, Immy K is a brave man for sticking it to the US).

We put up a video of Imran Khan saying exactly the above (attached to the article) so as to let readers see Imran actually say what he says. Too bad that doesn’t stop ye’ ol’ PTI email spam campaign….

Also threats – did I mention threats?

PTI supporters form the majority of online traffic, we supporters have huge unofficial influence on social media and we won’t hesitate to use our immense popularity to boycott your website. We can do a co-ordinated protest against Tribune which is our democratic right and we have the potential to make a boycott Tribune campaign go viral which will hit your advertising revenues.
I hope you understand the concerns raised in this letter and agree to correct your ethics, if not then prepare to face our boycott which we can demand to go official.

Its actually hilarious that the very same PTI that bashes ET for selling out to other political parties for ad revenue turns to threatening a cut of ad revenue as part of their spam threat. Hilarious really that PTI, who screams bias in the media is issuing threats to create bias in favor of them. Either way journalists get screwed and media ends up ‘biased’ but if its in your party’s favor, not such an issue eh PTI?

My personal opinion (and yeah I’m biased as all hell): PTI please boycott ET – you’re giving us a bad name.

EMAIL BOMB COPY BELOW

Dear Tribune,

I am emailing you to register my protest against your journalistic ethics and factual inaccuracies regarding PTI. Firstly I demand you correct the inaccuracy where it defames Imran Khan by having the headline ‘War in Afghanistan is Jihad’ where in reality as seen by proof on video he clearly said ‘It was PERCEIVED as Jihad’.

Since the PTI peace march the express tribune has published three op-eds and a blog which have been severely critical of it. Not a single blog or op-ed was published in favour of the peace march which was seen as a positive step in the international media. Also a rebuttal was written by a PTI supporter which was rejected by tribune. We PTI supporters back freedom of speech but your newspaper’s bias is so extreme that I suspect it is being used as a tool to degrade PTI. I won’t preach journalistic ethics to you since I expect you to know them.

I hope ET stands firm and doesn’t give into the blackmailing by these religious apologists. They only know how to bully and intimidate people.ET has been something different, something for those marginalised religious,non-religious and sexual minorities that these trolls want to kill off.I really do hope that your paper doesn’t give into this blackmailing and stays its ground. You guys provide space for those pushed to the wall in Pakistani society.

    Thanks for the blog post.

If you had also included the many polite non-threatening emails people like me sent to the (publicised) editor’s email address, that would present both sides of the story.

But I guess someone is just too busy “foaming at the mouth since receiving complaints, spewing hate at all of PTI as collective punishment and crying foul”.

    Good day…

Im copying here what I wrote to Jahanzeb on his Facebook wall

Ouch !!! – but do you think its only one-sided – we get bombed the same way in reverse – but either way we need to bring people to understand that dialogue and discussion is importnat – we can politically disagree all we want but all issues can and should be resolved with respect …

If you are abused i strongly suggest to NOT respond and ignore

i assure you it is not, even to an extent that even your tribune article today where you headlined IK as supporting Jihad was also playing with words and taking them out of context, it was it seemed a deliberate attempt to negatively portray his visit to Malala – our social media team wanted to place a rebuttal but internally wel asked to show restraint and rise above these attacks as it would only complicate things further – but whatever be our internal decision, the open-supporters had a different take on it — I only wish we could avoid these but quite simply the open nature of the internet leaves us with no choice

Its a fact, A person / genuine or not /, can put a PTI flag, put PTI in his name and use this twist to abuse on behalf of PTI – there is physically no way i can stop this open nature of the internet but I preach what i do – People who abuse me I DO NOT RESPOND, in fact if his language so much as abuses me, i BLOCK and move on – he/she does not even deserve a mention or a RT, as that will only help his ego to do more.

Some rogue Journalists – RT and engage in the abusive ReTweet war and that sadly trains and teaches these trolls (pro & anti) on tricks as to how to slap-stick their way to popularity.

As much as I might blame the illiterate trolls – I also blame our rouge Journalists (im not taking names, but you can easily guess) to have catered to these accounts and spurred on an abusive political discourse

[…] guess such a childish reaction can be expected from the PTI. We’ve seen such online attacks by the PTI horde before in the form of mass emails clogging up our inboxes. I think there has been enough written about the […]
